Front Or Rear Wheel Drive?

There are advantages and disadvantages to both front and rear wheel drive mobility scooters. Below we have highlighted key points about front and rear wheel drive mobility scooters.

Front Wheel Drive Mobility Scooters:

  • Front-wheel drive motors are more common on smaller scooters where they are situated just above the front wheel/wheels
  • They provide less power, have a lower top end speed (typically around 4mph), and are less well suited to hilly or rough terrain
  • Front wheel drive scooters are smaller and lighter but are less capable of carrying heavy loads
  • They are generally smaller and more maneuverable than rear-wheel drive scooters making them ideal for use in crowded areas and well suited to indoor and outdoor use

Rear-wheel drive scooters

  • Rear-wheel drive motors are more common on larger mobility scooters where they are situated beneath the mobility scooter seat
  • Rear-wheel drive motors provide more power, are better suited to dealing with hills and rough terrain, and are capable of carrying heavier loads than front-wheel drive scooters
  • Rear-wheel drive scooters have wider wheels and a larger base unit, making them heavier and less maneuverable than front-wheel drive scooters
  • They are more stable and have greater traction than front-wheel drive scooters
