Mobility Scooter Batteries
- Mobility scooter battery packs are normally available in 12 volt sizes
- Since most mobility scooters run off either 12 or 24 volt motors you will need either one or two battery packs depending on the size of your mobility scooter
- As a general rule of thumb front-wheel drive scooters require one battery pack whereas rear-wheel scooters require two battery packs. However, some 12 volt powered scooters can sometimes have an additional 12 volt battery pack added in order to double the mobility scooters travelling range.
- There are two main types of battery used in mobility scooters: 1) Sealed lead acid batteries, and 2) Gel cell batteries
- Gell cell batteries are the most common type as they are extremely safe and require little maintenance apart from regular charging (most manufacturers recommend that you regularly charge your battery via an internal or external charger for between 8-10 hours)
- It is recommended that gell cell batteries should be regularly discharged (run low) and then recharged to prolong their lifespan hich is typically around 2-5years
- The cost of a replacement gel cell battery would typically cost you upwards of £30 so it is a good idea to regularly charge them in order to prolong their healthy lifespan
- Most mobility scooters do not come with batteries and you would be required to buy these as extras
